Last year’s Portage County lawn calendar is not a contract with the grass. The grass answers the lot you have now. A Streetsboro backyard that added a playset, a Hudson maple that finally closed the canopy, or a Ravenna zone valve that sticks open will make an even program look like it failed. It did not fail. The site moved.
Portage Turf & Pest wants that change on the first call. Cool-season turf on Northeast Ohio clay will not green evenly if half the yard is now shade and half still takes full afternoon sun. We would rather edit the target than pour the same rate on two different lawns that happen to share a property line.
What we hear that actually changed the result
Trees filled in. Someone cut lower for a graduation party. Kids made a desire line from the gate to the trampoline. A sump line started weeping along the foundation. An irrigation clock still uses May minutes in August. Each of those is a different limiting factor. Fertilizer cannot replace a drainage outlet. More nitrogen will not thicken turf that never sees sun.
Write the project date, the last irrigation repair, and when color stopped matching. Photos of the thin strip next to the thick strip are the file. A verbal “it used to look better” is not.
Split sun and shade instead of averaging them
We would rather raise the cut and drop water frequency on the shaded clay than keep a full-sun fertility story there. Weeds that move into thin shade are a density problem, not a reason to change the whole-property weed date. Pest pressure along a new wood-chip play area is another file. Do not hide it inside the lawn round.
Aeration may lead when a screwdriver will not enter sealed Portage County clay, even if the soil test looks fine. That is structure, not hunger. Keep lime, sulfur, and fertilizer on their own evidence so the program stays readable next spring.
Traffic and occupancy belong on the ticket
If the lot is a rental, if a mowing vendor scalp-cuts, or if you travel every August, the cultural owner of watering and height has to be named. A program visit cannot babysit a deck height nobody controls. We will say that in the scope so you are not surprised.
HOA rules about watering days also change what a “standard round” can deliver. Tell us the rule. We will work inside it or tell you the limitation.
Approve the new target in writing
The plan should say what we stop doing, what we start doing, and how we judge the next month. Closeout records shade, drainage, traffic, and controller settings. Next year we compare that, not an old invoice title. Contact us with city, what changed, and photos. Ravenna weather is shared. Your playset and your maple are not.
What the next visit should prove
Pick one rectangle and judge it. If the shaded clay strip is the problem, success is density and a higher cut, not a brighter front yard photo. If the playset path is the problem, success is less wear, not more fertilizer. Write that so nobody argues in October.
