Frost seeding on a Hudson lot is freeze-thaw working seed into open soil while the ground still heaves. A spring overseed is a different clock: warmer soil, a hose plan, and often aeration first. Homeowners hear “seed” and assume either window will fill thin turf. We see bags dumped in April on ice-sealed clay with no water plan, then a complaint that seed failed.
We will say which window you actually have. Portage Turf & Pest would rather delay a pass than bill you for germination that never had a chance on Northeast Ohio clay.
Freeze-thaw is the tool, not a slogan
True frost seeding wants seed on the surface when nights still freeze and days thaw, so the soil opens and closes around the seed. If Hudson has already settled into a warm, dry stretch, that mechanism is gone. Broadcasting in May and calling it frost seeding does not invent freeze-thaw.
Photograph the thin areas, traffic paths, and whether the surface is sealed like a parking lot. If a screwdriver will not enter, seed sits on a crust. Aeration may have to lead. Frost seeding a compacted play-set corner is hope, not agronomy.
Spring overseed needs a named person on the hose
If we are in a spring or early-fall overseed, someone has to keep the seedbed damp through dry pockets. A Saturday soak during a rainy week does not replace that. Pets and kids need a detour. If the house will be empty, delay. Kent and Streetsboro lots share weather. They do not share your travel calendar.
Pre-emergent still in play can block seed. If you are unsure what went down this spring, we treat that as unknown. Guessing costs a season.
Do not hide a scalp with a bag of seed
A lawn that is cut too low, too often, will not hold a new stand. Fertility cannot hide a scalp, and neither can seed. If the mower is the limiter, we will say so before we open a bag. Thin turf along a Hudson sidewalk is often wear plus compaction. Seed without changing the path is a two-week green film.
