“Spray the weeds” is not a work order in Portage County. Ground ivy from a shaded Hudson sidewalk, nutsedge in a wet Ravenna clay corner, and foxtail in a thin sunny opening are three plants. They do not share a calendar. Treating them on the same Saturday because they are all green is how you burn turf and still see the sedge next week.
Portage Turf & Pest wants the plant named before we pick a date. Northeast Ohio clay packs. Thin turf on that surface is a weed farm. Killing the plant without a density plan is a short win.
Close photos beat a driveway diagnosis
Shoot the leaf up close and the pattern from the porch. Note wet versus dry, sun versus shade, and the last mowing height. If a spring pre-emergent went down, say so. If you already treated and the same footprint returned, that is the story, not the brand on the jug.
Try not to mow off the seed heads the morning we arrive. Seed heads and ligules are how we separate annual grasses from sedges in the field. A verbal “it is crabgrass” is often wrong on these lots.
Dates follow soil temperature and the plant
Pre-emergent is a temperature window, not a holiday. Post-emergent on drought-stressed weeds in August can fail on Portage County clay that sealed in the heat. We would rather wait for a recovery day than leave a mark and a living plant.
Seeding conflicts with some products. If the lawn is thin enough that repair is the real job, say you want grass, not just dead weeds. Seed and weed control can be sequenced. They should not be pretended to be one pass. Pest baits and lawn herbicides also need spacing when both are in play.
Control is not the same as rebuilding the stand
A dead crabgrass patch is dirt. Dirt grows the next flush. The ticket should say whether we are cleaning plants, repairing turf, or both, and who keeps kids and dogs off the area. Traffic along a Streetsboro walk is compaction. Spray will not thicken that ribbon.
Fertilizer color is a separate question. Yellow turf with weeds is often shade, water, or cut height. We will not hide that inside a weed visit.
What to send
City, photos, wet or dry location, and prior products if you know them. Contact us and we will name the plant and the window. Aurora sun and a wooded Streetsboro side yard will not share a spray day just because both owners said “weeds.”
What we will not do
We will not spray a shaded Hudson sidewalk on a crabgrass calendar. We will not treat nutsedge in a wet Ravenna corner as if it were foxtail in the sun. We will not promise density from chemistry alone on a compacted path.
If mole activity or grubs opened the stand, say that on the first call. Weed work sequenced after a soil repair lasts longer. Northeast Ohio clay is honest about openings. The plant list should be honest too.
