Close leaf, wide pattern, wet or dry
A seed head on a stem is not the same job as a rosette in a crack. Nutsedge in a spongy corner is not crabgrass in a thin, dry strip. If you already sprayed and it came back in the same footprint, that is the file. Try not to mow the evidence the morning we arrive.
Photograph the leaf, the patch from ten feet, and whether the soil is shiny or dusty. Note the last product if a ticket exists. Hudson shade weeds and an open Ravenna front yard will not share a mix just because both owners said weeds.
Clay and thin turf invite the next flush
Northeast Ohio clay packs. Thin turf after a scalp or a dry week is a weed invitation. Killing the plant without a density plan is a short win. If the stand is so thin that repair is the real job, say you want grass, not just brown weeds. Seeding windows conflict with some products. We would rather delay a post-emergent than stack chemistry that fights a fall seed plan.
A chronically wet corner often needs a downspout or a head adjustment more than a monthly sedge pass. We will say if water is the lead.
Timing is plant plus weather, not a holiday
Post-emergent on drought-stressed weeds in a heat spike often fails. We would rather wait for a recovery day. Pre-emergent is a soil-temperature window, not Memorial Day. If you want winter rye color, summer density, or a clean look for a party, those goals pick different products and different dates.
Kids’ play strips, dog yards, and HOA sidewalk edges need their own note. A mix that is right for a sunny Ravenna front lawn can be wrong along a shaded Kent side gate.
